Russell Witt

Russell Witt, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2026, surrounded by family at his home. Born on January 10, 1957, in Hettinger, North Dakota, Russell lived a life rich with love, warmth, and indelible contributions to everyone he encountered. His passing marks the end of a courageous battle with Front Temporal Dementia, handled with grace and resilience.

Russell was the cherished son of the late Richard and Kathleen (Lynch) Witt, and brother to Don, Bill and Dave Witt (Debbie Herr Halpain). He was predeceased by his grandparents, parents and sister, Nancy, many beloved aunts and uncles and several cousins. His legacy of love and laughter is carried on by his devoted wife, Mary Jo Barnett-Witt, whom he met in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They were married on February 12, 2000, and shared a beautiful journey together.

Russell was proud to consider himself as a father to Jarad, Mandy Barnett of Sioux Falls, Annette, Joel Mertens of Redwood Falls, Minnesota (MN), and Brent Witt of Oak Grove, MN. His heart was even fuller with the presence of his grandchildren of his heart: Jordan Barnett, Sydney, Madisyn and Dylan Mertens, and Ava Witt, all of whom brought him immense joy.

Raised in Lemmon, South Dakota, Russell graduated from Lemmon High School in 1975. He later pursued higher education and earned an Associate degree from the American Intercontinental University in 2014. His professional life was as diverse and dynamic as his interests. From surveying for oil exploration across the country with his brothers to construction work in Montana. Russell also held a manager position at the Eagles Club in Marshall, MN for many years. He found his calling in Sioux Falls, where he began a lengthy career at Citi, working in MIS, Compliance, and the Retention department. His dedication and work ethic were evident in every role he undertook, including his part-time work at Mac's Hardware and his contributions to solar panel installations.

Russell was an active member of his community, participating in the St. Joseph Cathedral congregation and the Knights of Columbus in earlier years. His love for sports was lifelong; he played and coached softball, sharing his passion and knowledge with young players. A lover of Jepordy, playing card games with family and friends, his skills in pinochle and rummy were well-known among friends and family.

His quick wit, storytelling prowess, and generosity were hallmarks of his character. Russell was always ready to lend a helping hand, whether it was clearing snow for neighbors or offering support to those in need. His genuine personality and commitment to family and friends earned him the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

A prayer service to honor Russell's life will be held on September 23rd, 2026, between the hours of 5-8 pm at Chapel Hill funeral home in Sioux Falls. A funeral mass celabrating his life will held on September 24th at 10:00 AM at St. Joseph Cathedral, located at 521 N Duluth Ave, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. For those unable to attend in Sioux Falls, on October 11th in Lemmon, SD at Saint Mary's Catholic Church at 10:30 am, a note for Russell as an intention for the repose his soul. The funeral will be live streamed from my Facebook page if you are unable to attend.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in Russell's memory to the Alzheimer's Research Association, headquartered in Saint Clair Shores, MI.The Witt family extends heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers, medical professionals, and Sanford Hospice Team who provided exceptional care for Russell. Their support allowed him to spend his final days surrounded by love and comfort, both at home and at Ava's House.Russell's life was a testament to the power of kindness, love, and community. He will be dearly missed but forever remembered by those whose lives he touched.
