Patrick Berry

January 9, 1967 — August 3, 2025

Sioux Falls

Patrick “Pat” Michael Berry, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, after a brief time in hospice care. His life was marked by quiet strength, deep humility, and a steadfast devotion to his family, friends, and career.

Pat was born on January 9, 1967, in Niles, Illinois. As a child, he and his family relocated to Sioux Falls, the city he would proudly call home for the rest of his life. Even from a young age, Pat was known for his sharp intellect, dry wit, and calm, thoughtful demeanor—qualities that would remain his signature throughout his life.

He pursued his undergraduate studies at the University of South Dakota, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in psychology. While at USD, he was a proud member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and formed many lifelong friendships. His presence on campus was felt not just in the classroom, but in the community. In recognition of his character, leadership, and the genuine way he connected with others, Pat was honored as Dakota Days King, a title that spoke to the admiration and respect of his peers. He continued his education at Emporia State University, where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Human Factors Psychology, and ultimately returned to USD to earn his Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology, becoming Dr. Patrick Berry—though he never insisted on the title.

Pat dedicated over 25 years of his professional life to Risk Administration Services (RAS), where he served as Executive Vice President of Loss Control. He brought a rare combination of scientific knowledge, strategic thinking, and emotional intelligence to his role.

But of all his roles, the one he cherished most was that of husband and father. He married Jody Nelson, with whom he built a loving and lively home. Pat and Jody recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised their children with kindness, humor, and a strong sense of family. Pat’s love for his family was steadfast. He was the proud dad to his three children—Allison, Payton, and Olivia Berry.

He found immense joy in being involved in his daughters’ lives. Whether coaching their sports teams, walking nine holes with them on the golf course, or hitting tennis balls across the net, Pat showed up with quiet consistency and unwavering support.

Pat is preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Berry, and his father, Brian Berry. He is survived by his wife, Jody Berry; his children, Alli, Payton, and Olivia; his brother, Brian Berry Jr.; and his sister-in-law, Maxine Berry, as well as his beloved nieces and nephews, who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

His family is profoundly grateful for the care and compassion shown during his final days in hospice. Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, his life leaves an even greater legacy.

A private celebration of Pat’s life will be held with his immediate family, simple and meaningful, the way he would have wanted it. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sanford Hospice Foundation Cottage in Sioux Falls.
