Nancy Herrig

March 6, 1943 — May 5, 2026

Sioux Falls

Nancy Carolyn Herrig, 83, of Sioux Falls, passed away on May 5, 2026.

She was born on March 6, 1943, in Philadelphia, to Paul and Lillian Guidi. She later moved to Sioux Falls with her mother and bonus father, Donald Olson Sr., where she was blessed to become a big sister to Donald and Leonard Olson.

It was in Sioux Falls that she met the love of her life, Joe Herrig, at the Dakota Ballroom. Their connection was instant, and they were married on June 29, 1963, in Columbus, where Joe was stationed in the Army. After his discharge, they returned to Sioux Falls to be closer to family. Nancy became a beloved and recognizable salesperson at Younkers, where many knew her friendly face and warm smile.

In 1980, Nancy’s life was forever changed with the birth of her son, Michael Herrig. “Mike,” as he was lovingly called, became the light of her world, and she proudly embraced the role of a devoted “helicopter mom.”

Her joy only grew when she became a grandmother. Lillian (Lily), her granddaughter, was truly the light of her life. Nancy often joked, “I’m not sure why I had Mike—being a grandma is more fun!” Lily brought her endless pride and happiness, and Nancy never missed a chance to share how smart, beautiful, and talented she was.

Nancy also had a deep love for animals. She made sure every stray had a safe place, caring for cats, dogs, and even squirrels. She especially adored feeding her favorite squirrels—Suzie, Tank, and Medium Fat.

Nancy is survived by her son, Mike (Abby) Herrig; her granddaughter, Lily Herrig; her brother, Donald Olson, all of Sioux Falls; her sisters, Margaret Guidi Passio, Donna (Linda) Guidi, and Paula Guinta, all of the Philadelphia area; and many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Herrig; her grandson, Joseph Herrig; her parents, Paul Guidi and Lillian Olson; her bonus father, Donald Olson Sr.; her brothers, Leonard Olson and Paul Guidi Jr.; and her sister-in-law, Sherry Olson. Services will be announced privately at a later date.
