Melvin Leroy Stroup passed away peacefully on June 13th, 2026 at the VA Hospice Cottage in Sioux Falls, SD, surrounded by his loving family.
Mel was born December 6th, 1934, the youngest of 5, to Archie and Eva Stroup in Watertown, SD. A couple years after graduating from High School, Mel enlisted in the United States Army. Upon discharge he started his career as a meat cutter/manager which eventually led to teaching at Pipestone Vocational School.
While working in Mitchell, South Dakota, he was invited to a steak fry and that evening he met his future wife, Evelyn. A matchmaking scheme by co-workers resulted in marriage 3 months later. This began 65 years of love and companionship where they did everything together.
Along the way they had a detour which led to farming near Emery, SD. Mel was a patient and loving father whose daughters enjoyed the country life and helping Dad outside.
After retiring, Mel and Evelyn moved to Estelline, South Dakota to spend time with grandchildren. There Mel began his next, and probably favorite, career as a bus driver. He loved his “bus kids” and following their activities.
Mel loved the outdoors, especially camping, fishing, canoeing, and golf with friends and family. He and Evelyn cherished their camping vacations in northern Minnesota for more than 20 years. It was their own little piece of heaven! For better or worse he was also a life-long Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan.
Mel had a warmth and humor that touched many. He could talk to anyone about anything and was always willing to lend a helping hand. He knew what “paying it forward” meant.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents and 4 siblings. He is survived by his beloved wife, Evelyn; daughters: Linda Poss (Larry), Kay Miller (Darryl Carlson), and Deanna Brouwer (David); his grandchildren: Casey, Savannah, Mallory, Travis, and Korey; and numerous great grandchildren.
Mel will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. Rest in peace Mel.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
