Helen Welfl

Helen Geraldine Welfl passed away on June 27th, 2026 at the Good Samaritan Center in DeSmet, SD at the age of 90.

Helen was born on August 30th, 1935 to Walter and Clara Griffith in Irene, SD. She attended the Irene school district and graduated in 1953. After high school Helen went on to study for a receptionist degree in Springfield, SD. While attending college she met her soul mate Gerald (Jerry) Welfl. They were united in marriage August 19th, 1955. After the wedding the couple moved to Gregory, SD. Helen and Jerry had four children, Rick, Randy, Ross, and Ralene.

Throughout their 67 years of marriage, Helen and Jerry lived in several different towns, settling in Wyoming for over 30 years. In 2006 the couple would move to De Smet as their final home. Throughout all the traveling, Helen worked at city halls, banks, colleges, and numerous clinics. Helen had extraordinary typing skills.

Helen was her children's biggest fan, whether it was attending a rodeo, track meet, wrestling tournament, or gymnastics meet, her children could always count on her being there. Helen was also very fond of dogs, she would almost never go without a dog at her side. Mitsy was Helen’s most precious dog of all.

Helen is survived by her four children. Rick Welfl of Spearfish, SD, Randy (Mavis) Welfl of Thermopolis, Wy. Ross Welfl of Burlington, Wy. Ralene (John) Coughlin of De Smet, SD. 12 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and special friend Seanna Linafelter family of Spearfish, SD.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gerald Welfl, parents Walter and Clara Griffith, grandson Bailey Welfl, great grandson Jack Welfl, special friend Marland Linafelter.
