Donald Clayton Kurtenbach

December 1, 1925 — October 18, 2010

Donald Kurtenbach, loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, was born Dec, 1, 1925 at Brookings, the son of Preston and Emma (Tolk) Kurtenbach. He graduated from Toronto High School in 1943 and then served in the US Navy for three years during WWII. He married Dorothea Jones on November 4, 1948 at Gary, SD. They lived at Moorhead, Mn., while Don attended mechanical school. Don worked with his brother for a few years and then drove a truck for a granite company at Milbank. He and Dorothea moved to Sioux Falls where Don worked as a mechanic at International Harvester for several years. He was a heavy equipment salesman for a number of years before he went to work in the maintenance department at McKennan Hospital for 15 years. Don enjoyed gardening, woodworking and taking on his family in a game of Scrabble. He was a life-member of the American Legion Post at Astoria. He is survived by his wife, Dorothea; his children, David (Mary) of Mooreton, ND, Kenneth of Marquette, MI, Gary (Susan) of Bismarck, ND, Dale (Pat) of Brandon, Mary Ann Kurtenbach of Johnston, IA, Lori (Jay) Schriever of Woonsocket; 10 grandchildren, Paul (Janice) Kurtenbach, Jennifer Kurtenbach, Kelly (Pete) Wall, Aaron Kurtenbach, Ashley Kurtenbach, Emily (Jake) Stenzel, Halie Kurtenbach, Shawna Boehmer, Amy (Kevin) Lawrence; seven great grandchildren, Emma Kurtenbach, Chase Kurtenbach, Maggie Kurtenbach, Breanna Boehmer, Brayden Boehmer, Mariana Lawrence and Phinley Lawrence; and two brothers, Preston of Astoria and Willis (Donna) of Brandt. Don is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Virgil, who lost his life serving his country during WWII, and a brother, Vern. Memorials may be directed to Dougherty Hospice or the Salvation Army.
