Merle Powell

Merle was born to Frank and Alice (Blood) Powell on September 14th 1933 in Brandon, SD. He attended Garretson High School where he graduated in 1951. Following graduation he joined the Air Force where he served until he was discharged in 1955. He met the love of his life, Connie Stoner and was united in marriage on October 5th 1956. They lived in Garretson, SD where they raised their 5 children. Merle and Connie moved to Sioux Falls in 1974 where he continued to reside until his passing. Merle was an avid musician and was a member of several bands. He was inducted into the South Dakota Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007 and into the Legends of South Dakota in 2011. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife Connie Stoner Powell, Sioux Falls, SD; children Mike (Cindy) Powell, Chester, SD; Kenny (Jeanette) Powell, Sioux Falls, SD; Todd (Jodi Olson), Lennox, SD; Laurie Tabbert (David Kinney), Santa Rosa, CA; sisters Darlene Riet, Dell Rapids, SD; Doris Hoiland, Brandon, SD; Artis Hoiland, Sioux Falls, SD; Phyllis Mehause, Sioux Falls, SD; Audrey Nelson, Albert Lea, MN; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other family. Merle was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Alice Powell; brothers Curt Powell and Kenny Powell; daughter Wendy Powell; great granddaughter Jaycee Beckman and 4 brother-in-laws. Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for light lunch and fellowship at the VFW Bingo Hall at 3601 S Minnesota Ave following the committal service.
