Arleen Howlett

Arleen Katharina (Bauer) Howlett died Thursday, November 28 at the Southridge Health Care Facility. Arleen was born to William and Katharnia (Schick) Bauer, January 13, 1926 on a farm near Eureka, South Dakota. She recounted her early years of having lived in the dust bowl and playing on the mounds of dirt which had blown in and filled the road ditches. She remembered surviving on eggs and chicken because they could always somehow find enough feed to keep the hens and roosters alive. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Hofenstal Lutheran Church rural Eureka. Arleen completed 8 years of education and a cosmetology course of study in Aberdeen before moving to Sioux Falls. She met Joseph Howlett there and they wed August 23, 1947. They were married for 36 years until his untimely death in 1983. After giving birth to four children and rearing them through their early years, she went to work in the Sioux Falls School District food services. She retired from food services as Supervisor of Edison Middle School lunch program. She enjoyed cooking German foods for family and friends. Arleen was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church and became will known for the gravy at the annual turkey meal served for the local community. After her retirement she transferred to Faith Lutheran Church and shared her cooking skills there. She served as a coach in the city girl?s softball league. Arleen was involved in the Navy Mother organization and lent her support to the local Naval Reserve. She especially enjoyed being able to participate in the Veteran?s Day Navy program at the US Battle Ship South Dakota. Arleen was preceded in death by her parents, husband and two brother Walter and Ervin Bauer of Eureka, South Dakota. Arleen is survived by one brother Argo Bauer Lodi, California and her 4 children: Dale and Sue Howlett of Watertown, SD; Milo and Margo Howlett of Sioux Falls, Joe and Lois Howlett of Orange, Texas; Emily and Kelly Raymond of Sioux Falls; 8 grandchildren, Ryan (Stacy) Howlett, Matthew (Kari) Howlett, Terry Thompson, Adam Raymond, Jacob Raymond, Richard Thompson, Nathan Howlett and Tyler Howlett and 6 great children; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
