John W. Huber

December 13, 1940 — February 19, 2015

John William Huber, Sr died in his home February 19, 2015. John was born December 13, 1940 in Carter, SD to Richard and Hertha (Schade) Huber. He was the fifth of six children. John grew up on the family farm near Carter until the family moved to Norfolk, NE in 1957. In 1958, John joined the Army Reserves and served until his honorable discharge in 1966. He married Mardel Dieckman on May 25, 1960. They moved from Norfolk, NE to Sioux Falls, SD in 1965. They were married for 20 years and had five children together: John Jr, Donald, Debora, Scott and Toby. Their marriage ended in 1980. In the early years John worked as a butcher and construction worker and owned a gas station for a short time. Then in 1968 he started driving truck for Transport, Inc. He drove for various trucking companies and at one time owned his own truck, until he moved to Portland, OR in 1980. John lived in the Portland area, where he worked construction or drove truck for more than 25 years. In June of 2008, after a close call with a heart attack, John moved back to Sioux Falls, SD to be closer to his family. He continued to drive truck until October of 2014. John enjoyed playing Texas Hold Em, fishing, watching movies, talking on the phone with his family and friends (and when youd try to say goodbye youd end up talking for another half an hour), he liked following the Pittsburgh Steelers, and he enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandkids, great-grandchildren, family and friends whenever he could. Grateful for having shared his life are his children: John (Cynthia) Huber Jr, Calhan, CO; Donald (Lori) Huber, Sioux Falls; Debora (Kevin) Stene, Sioux Falls; Scott (Terri) Huber, Sioux Falls and Toby (April) Huber, Sioux Falls; his 15 grandchildren and his 15 great-grandchildren; his brother Art Huber, Lincoln, NE; sister Martha (Clayton) Nelson, Brandon, SD; sister Tillie (Marvin) Johnson, San Diego, CA and brother Richard (Cindy Jo) Huber, Norfolk, NE; his close friend Kathryn Kitti Hawk; as well as and his many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Richard and Hertha Huber; granddaughter Chelsea Marie Huber; brother Paul Huber, sister Velma Honeman, and Mardel (Huber) Gillen.
