Violet Marie Gilberts

Violet Marie Gilberts was born April 8, 1924 at Waubay, South Dakota, the daughter of Julius and Marie (Leimkuhl) Schmig. She grew up at Waubay and where she attended school. Violets mother passed away when she was a young lady so she worked at home and took care of her family. Violet also worked as a baby sitter and cooked for the threshing crews. Violet married Kenneth Gilberts November 23, 1944 at Webster, South Dakota and they farmed south of Webster for a few years. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1959. Violet worked at the Whitehouse Caf for a few years and then went to work at Raven Industries. After several years at Ravens, she went to work at McDonalds from 1974 1982. She took care of Ken for several years after he had a stroke. He passed away in 1993. Violet went to work at Burger King on north Minnesota Ave for over 14 years. Violet enjoyed baking and has accumulated a large collection of elephants over the years. She was a member of East Side Lutheran Church for many years. Grateful for having shared in her life are her children, Melvin Gilberts and friend Pam; Dale (Sherry) Gilberts, Cheryl (Mike) Lynde, Judy (Roy) Jensen and Pam (Sam) Peterson, all of Sioux Falls; fourteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; three siblings, Ray Bud Schmig of Sioux Falls, Alice Anderson of North Dakota and Opal Lynch of Ohio.She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and two daughters, Karen and Beverly. Thank you to all of the family members who loved and cared for Violet, especially, granddaughter, Karrie Maddsion and Tyler. Special thanks are also extended to the friends that stopped to visit Violet.
