Wesley Hejl

September 12, 1920 — August 15, 2016

Wes Hejl, 95 of Sioux Falls passed away on August 15, 2016. Wesley was born September 12, 1920 to Fred and Rose Hejl in rural Yankton County. Wes was proud of his Czech heritage and he spoke the language fluently. He was a handyman who enjoyed tools. Wes worked for Manchester Bisquit and Fenns Ice Cream along with carpentry and maintenance work for Arnie Teslow. He worked part time until he was 90 years old at Super Car Wash. He enjoyed cars and kept a list of the thirty nine that he had owned. We was a WWII Veteran and was wounded in combat, receiving a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He enjoyed taking the Veterans Honor Flight to Washington D.C. along with his daughter, Bernice (Bernie). Wes will long be remembered for his kind, thoughtful and friendly ways. A friend once remarked that he could talk to a telephone pole and it would talk back. He was a great story teller with an amazing memory for names and the histories of family and friends. One of Wes greatest joys in his last years was relating many of those stories to his nephew, Roger, who made weekly telephone calls to Uncle Wes. Wes is survived by a daughter, Bernie (Richard) Larsen of Sioux Fall, daughter, Sandra Ankrum; brother, Joseph (Dorothy) Hejl; grandson, Chad Phillips; great grandsons, Cameron and Chase; and four great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
