Mary Ellen was born March 26, 1926 at Ortley, South Dakota, the daughter of Gwilym and Bethel (Eaton) Evans. She graduated from Wessington Springs High School and attended two years at Wessington Springs Seminary College. Mary Ellen married Donald Hegstrum on March 12, 1949 and they lived in Sioux Falls and later were divorced but remained close friends. Mary Ellen worked at the Sioux Falls Public Library for 10 years and then enrolled at the University of Sioux Falls to earn a teaching degree. She was a third grade teacher at Cleveland Elementary School for 12 years and then returned to the library for 10 more years before she retired. Mary Ellen enjoyed reading, exploring family genealogy and traveling. She loved cats and always had one at home. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Tom (Brenda) Evans of Bennington, NE, Kathie Miller of Lincoln, NE, David (Jean) Evans of Omaha, NE, Nancy Evans of Red Oak, IA, Don (Marianne) Evans of Albuquerque, NM, Jean Whittington of Hillsboro, TX, Larry (Terry) Evans of Matthews, NC, Chris Garland of Phoenix, AZ; many great nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helen Grace Evans; and three brothers, Thomas Allen Evans, Ward Haven Evans, and Donald Allison Evans. Private interment services will take place at Graceland Cemetery in Mitchell, South Dakota.
