Walter Kroger

Walter Stanley Kroger, age 98, of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, March 19, at Avera Mckennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. He was born Oct. 14, 1918 on a farm in Moody County in rural Colman, S.D., the first child of Herman and Laura Arnilda (Hanson) Kroger. Walter worked as a carpenter and mason during his extensive, professional career. He married Harriet M. Knutson Feb. 3, 1941 in Pipestone, Minn. Before moving to Sioux Falls in 2003, the couple had resided in Custer, S.D. for over 22 years. Survivors include a daughter, Donna Benson, and her husband, Robert, Sioux Falls; a sister, Sharon Engberg, Sioux Falls; two grandchildren, Scott Benson, and his wife, Larene, Glendive, Mt. and Tim Benson, Sioux Falls. Walter was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Merlin, his parents, five brothers, and one sister. Graveside services will take place 2 p.m. Wed. March 22 at the Colman Cemetery in Colman, S.D. Chapel Hill Funeral Home of Sioux Falls is in charge of arrangements.
